Math question type

With the math question type, learners can enter mathematical expressions as a response. This supports open-ended questions with input such as numeric values, equations, and complex expressions as answers and doesn’t force learners into fixed answer choices. This question type is highly flexible, allowing for response boxes to be placed inline with text, on multiple lines, within a table, or embedded within a math expression.

Auto-scored with our advanced math scoring engine, the system recognizes mathematically equivalent answers. It allows for multiple valid forms such as reordered variables, tolerance, or decimal–fraction interchangeability. See the 'Scoring' section for details on various scoring methods available.

Demo 1: Single response field

This demo showcases the core features of the math question type. The learner can enter their answer to the question into the response field with the aid of our formula keypad. In this example, their response will be auto-scored with our symbolically equal to method allowing mathematically equivalent answers to receive full marks.

Demo 2: Multiple response fields in a table

In this demo we highlight how the math question type supports multiple response fields as well as the ability to place response fields inside a table. We've also enabled a simplified horizontal keypad given the context of this question.

Demo 3: Multiple response fields in an expression

In this demo multiple response fields are embedded within a mathematical expression showing the versatility of the math question type. This is helpful when you want to template the response, either guiding the learner on an appropriate format or saving them time from entering parts of the solution that aren't key to the learning objective.
